Wang, Nationals Agree to Deal
Former Yankees pitcher Chien-Ming Wang reportedly agreed to an one-year contract with the Nationals on Tuesday for $2 million, with playing incentives that could boost the value of the contract to $3 million.
Wang and the Yankees suffered a falling out last season, after he started the season with a 9.64 ERA and a 1-6 record. The Yankees shut him down for the year on July 29, allowing him to get shoulder surgery to repair a tear in his right shoulder capsule, and did not extend his contract past this season. (Wang likely won’t be able to pitch until sometime between April and June.)
Wang won 19 games in each of the 2006 and 2007 seasons, and opened the Yankees’ postseason in both years. But on June 15, 2008, Wang severely injured his right foot while running the bases, and he’s not regained his old form since.
This gives Wang an extremely rare opportunity – he’s going from the best team in baseball to the worst in one year flat.
