Surgery awaits Nats’ young star Friday

By Bud L. Ellis

Stephen Strasburg’s road to returning to pitching begins Friday on the operating table.

Thirteen days after suffering a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament in his right pitching elbow, Strasburg will undergo surgery that will keep him out of action for the next 12 to 18 months. (Read More…)

Strasburg to miss at least a year with torn ligament

By Bud L. Ellis

It is the worst fears of the Washington Nationals come true: the MRI results of their top young pitcher are in, and it’s not good news.

Stephen Strasburg, who grabbed the attention of the baseball world with his 100 mph fastball and powerful changeup, will miss at least the next 12 months with a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. (Read More…)

Strasburg heading back to DL following injury

By Bud L. Ellis

The next two weeks? There will not be any starts from Stephen Strasburg for the Washington Nationals?

The rest of the phenom’s rookie season? That remains to be seen.

The top pick in last summer’s draft, Washington’s hot-shot rookie will go on the disabled list later this week after suffering a strained flexor tendon in his right forearm. (Read More…)

Nationals’ phenom leaves start after suffering injury

By Bud L. Ellis

Whether or not Stephen Strasburg’s rookie season is over after 12 starts remains to be seen.

What can be said with certainty is the scene of the Washington Nationals’ rookie phenom shaking his pitching arm after a fifth-inning delivery, then walking off the field, was far from comforting. (Read More…)

Strasburg sharp in second outing back from DL

By Bud L. Ellis

The numbers from his last start out looked more like what we expect from Stephen Strasburg.

The Washington Nationals’ rookie sensation looked much sharper Sunday in his second start following his three-week stay on the disabled list for shoulder stiffness. Strasburg fanned seven hitting and did not walk a batter in five innings, allowing just one run while taking a no-decision in Washington’s 5-3 home victory over Arizona. (Read More…)

Strasburg placed on disabled list

The Washington Nationals have placed pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg on the disabled list.

Strasburg experienced tightness in his shoulder while trying to warm up in the bullpen for his latest start.

The team scratched him from his schedule start and had him undergo an MRI and X-rays, both of which came back negative.

The Nationals want to exercise extreme caution with their prized young right-hander, and he already had an innings limit anyway. (Read More…)

Strasburg scratched from start

Washington Nationals ace Stephen Straburg was scratched from his start with a tight shoulder.

Strasburg tried to get loose in the bullpen before the game and said he felt tightness in his shoulder.

He assured the team he would still be able to get loose and pitch, but the Nationals immediately shut him down.

The pitcher was then checked by an MRI and X-rays, both of which revealed no problems. (Read More…)

Nats take no chances, scratch Strasburg

By Bud L. Ellis

The Washington Nationals have experienced a huge bump in attention and buzz thanks to Stephen Strasburg. There was no way the Nats’ brass was going to take any chances with their rookie sensation.

That’s why it was Miguel Batista, and not the No. 1 overall pick from last year’s draft, delivering the first pitch Tuesday against Atlanta at Nationals Park. Strasburg was scratched from his scheduled start after experiencing shoulder stiffness while warming up in the bullpen. (Read More…)

Nationals could deal Dunn

The Washington Nationals are interested in trading veteran first baseman Adam Dunn before the deadline.

Dunn is having another good season but has started cool off a little bit since the All-Star break.

Also, the Nationals finally seem to have conceded that they are officially out of the wild card race.

With that admission, the Nationals want to see more of their young players get playing time and look to add more prospects. (Read More…)

Strasburg moves to 5-2 as Nats down Reds

By Bud L. Ellis

The cozy dimensions of Great American Ball Park could not slow down America’s biggest baseball phenom Wednesday night.

Stephen Strasburg gave up three runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings, but backed by a strong offensive showing from his Washington Nationals teammates earned the victory as the Nats downed Cincinnati 8-5. (Read More…)
